How do I change my address?

You can update your address directly from your profiles, accessible through the dashboard. When you update a VT529 account’s address, there’s a 15-day hold for all check withdrawals requested using the Withdrawal Form, by calling customer service, or requested online.

Do I have to pay taxes on my account?

As long as the money in your VT529 account is used for qualified expenses, it will not be counted as income for your state or federal taxes. If a purchase or other expense doesn’t qualify as an eligible expense, you’ll have to pay taxes and a 10% penalty on the interest portion of the amount spent.

Where can I change my password or set up multi-factor authentication?

Once you log in, select “Security Center” from the dropdown menu next to your profile icon in the upper right corner of the screen. You can also go to your profile and select the “Open Security Center” button next to Login settings. From here, you can make any changes to your account that have to do with your login credentials.

Can I enroll and manage a VT529 account with a paper form?

The easiest and fastest way to enroll and manage a VT529 account is online. If you want to use paper forms for enrollment or managing your account, you can find the forms here.

How do I choose my investment options?

When you open a VT529 account, you will be asked to pick your investment options. You will be shown all options, and you will assign a dollar amount to each option. You can choose multiple options or only one option. Each time you make a contribution, you must enter the dollar amount for each option.

What do I need to open an account?

Make sure you have this information handy:

  • Your email address;

  • Your birthday;

  • Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number;

  • Residency address.

How do I open an account?

It only takes a few minutes to open an account online. You will need to have some basic information handy.

Once you’ve been verified, you’ll set up the account details by:

  • Creating a login

  • Connecting a bank account

  • Selecting the cash option and/or an investment option

What are qualified expenses?

A VT529 account can be used to pay for a number of education costs. These may include:

  • Tuition or fees for eligible universities, technical schools, training programs, and more

  • Computers and educational equipment

  • Books and supplies

  • Housing and rent

  • Student loans

How do I prove a qualified expense?

Keep your receipts and documentation for all qualified expenses in case the IRS wants to see them. We don’t require proof of your expenses, but you should have it for your records.
